Description
This lovely vanity or dresser set is a product of the A.G. Richardson Company, an English porcelain manufacturer that was in operation from 1915 to 1974.The set consists of a dresser tray, a candle holder and three covered jars.
All of the pieces are from the Crown Ducal Ware line and feature a blush ivory or peach background (blush ware) with beautiful transfer designs.
It is a matching set with the exception of the smallest covered jar.
Four of the pieces feature an image of hummingbirds perched on branches with a butterfly design on the lids of the jars.
They all are marked with the pattern #A1168.
The lone smaller jar features a bird of paradise motif and does not have a pattern number on the backstamp.
The black mark, “Crown Ducal Ware England”, is stamped on the base of the tray, candle holder and two of the covered jars.
The other jar features the red, “Trademark Crown Ducal Ware AGR & Co. Ltd England”.
Both of these backstamps indicate that this vintage set was produced sometime in the 1920’s, most likely, 1929.
The tray measures approximately 14” in length by 8 ¼” in width; the candle holder measures approximately 6 ¼” in height with a 2 ¾” hexagon-shaped base; the matching hexagon-shaped covered jars measure approximately 4” in width (at their widest point) by 3 1/4” in height (including lids); the smallest round jar measures approximately 3 ¼’ in diameter by 2 ¾” in height (including lid). This delicate porcelain set is in very good condition, with a few exceptions.
The tray has no chips or cracks but does have some paint wear around the edges, crazing, and a few marks that could not be removed.
Otherwise the tray boasts a most gorgeous central design that is still stunning and brilliantly colored.
The candle holder has no chips or cracks but does have some wear to the gold trim, crazing and a small manufacturing flaw (indent on the lip).
One of the covered jars has wear to the gold trim, crazing and a small chip to the inside of the lid.
The next covered jar (the one with the red backstamp) has wear to the gold trim, crazing and a small chip to the lip.
The lid of this jar has a significant blemish or chip on the rim.
The final jar has a crack running from lip to base and has wear to the gold trim.
All of the pieces in this set are adorned with attractive and colorful designs and enhanced with gold gilding, making it a very desirable porcelain set.
Made in England during the Victorian Era, this is an impressive dresser set and an exquisite treasure from the past.
