Description
Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled the "Bismarck Archipelago". This is a string of islands off the coast of New Guinea, mostly jungles and swamps. The US needed to capture these islands prior to its invasion of the Philippines, to secure its position against Japanese counterattack. The Japanese had a major presence at Rabaul, which could re-supply other Japanese forces or even serve as a base for attacks on Australia and New Zealand. This area would serve as an Allied base for the attack on the Philippines, being planned by General Douglas MacArthur. The landing began December 1943 and, after initial difficulties, succeeded and drove Japanese forces into the jungles. The Allies quickly seized the airfield. After four months of fierce fighting, the Archipelago was secured.US Army Campaigns of World War II - Bismarck Archipelago

This is a
string of islands off the coast of New Guinea
, mostly jungles and swamps. The US needed to capture these islands prior to its invasion of the Philippines, to secure its position against Japanese counterattack.
The Japanese had a major presence at Rabaul,
which could re-supply other Japanese forces or even serve as a base for attacks on Australia and New Zealand. This area would
serve as an Allied base for the attack on the Philippines,
being planned by General Douglas MacArthur. The landing began December 1943 and, after initial difficulties, succeeded and drove Japanese forces back into the jungles.
The Allies quickly seized the airfield.
After four months of fierce fighting, the Archipelago was secured. This publication has some great maps showing the "cartwheel" area of attack; the assault on Los Negros; and the Lugos-Lorengau fighting area.
This publication, 28 pages, is in excellent, virtual mint condition. There are no rips or tears, no writing or markings, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.
