Description
Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled the "Anzio". The site of a major Allied landing in 1944, Anzio, located near Rome, was a complete surprise to the Germans, who had relocated some of their forces to other fronts. The invasion was intended to give the Allies a presence behind the Gustaf Line, a major German defensive position. When German reinforcements came into the battle, there was fierce fighting by both sides with high casualty rates, the Allied intent on holding the beachhead and their positions, and the Germans, attempting to dislodge them. After a lull in the fighting of several months, the Allies ultimately broke through the German front and pushed further north in Italy.US Army Campaigns of World War II - Anzio, Italy
