    Description

U.S. Civil War 35th New Jersey Zouaves Kepi, ID’ed
This is an original U.S. Civil War 35
    th
New Jersey Zouaves Kepi. The Kepi is from a Union Zouave Second Lieutenant. The Kepi has a blue wool body on a red band edged with double ranks of gold bullion, matching ranks on the front, back, both sides, and the quatrefoil centered on the crown. There are some moth holes on the body of the hat. The chin strap is missing and matching Federal eagle buttons are still intact. The Kepi has a wide tarred leather visor with stitched leather edging. Most of visor stitching that holds it the hat is missing but the visor is still attached. There is a brass Infantry insignia with the number 35 in the center. The badge has a name writer across the top of the horn that looks to be “T.B. Wal??” The black cotton lining and brown leather sweatband are intact. Inside the crown of the Kepi is stamped “G.F. SMITH / MAKER / 15 DUTCH – ST/ NEW YORK”
