The vatu was introduced in 1981, one year after independence, to replace the New Hebrides franc at par. The vatu was issued as a single unit with no subunit, having 1 vatu being the smallest denomination possible, in a similar vein to the Japanese yen and Tajikistani ruble. The official ISO code for the Vanuatu vatu is VUV. Its nationally recognized symbol Vt is the most often used in written format. The vatu's introduction also saw the end of the official circulation of the Australian dollar in Vanuatu.

    ND (1982) 100 Vatu from Vanuatu, Central Bank. Pick number 1a and serial number AA206777. Graded 67 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) Superb Gem Uncirculated by PMG and according to PMG Population Report, this banknote has none graded finer! Crisp, well-embossed paper visible through the holder! Perfectly centered with impeccable margins all seen through the PMG Holder! Black serial number on the front side seen twice and Bold, vibrant colors noted adding to the beauty of this banknote.

    The front of the note has many designs and a statute of Long god yumi stanap which is Vanuatu's motto which translates to "In God We Stand". On the reverse side is some animals on a field. The watermark is a man's head. Beautiful banknote with excellent eye appeal! \
