    Description

This is an original Civil War period M1858 Union Army enlisted man's brimmed black felt Hardee hat. I obtained it in the mid-1970s from a military dealer.  The hat has a three inch brim, with two rows of tan stitching near the outer edge, and a 5 1/2 inch high, flat top crown.  There is a 3/4 inch ribbed black silk hat band at the base of the crown.  The nice quality fur felt is thinner than on most modern men's hats.  It does not react when exposed to black light.  On the front there is a brass infantry hunting horn insignia with a brass number 2.  The left brim is turned up and held by a brass eagle plate with a bottom hook.  There is a tiny, black enameled eye sewn to the brim edge to secure the hook.  The insignias have back loops and are secured inside by leather strips.  The solder holding the lower loop of the eagle plate has detached, but that loop is still secured on the interior of the crown. There is a fringed worsted wool Infantry blue hat cord.  The wool covered cord slide has faded from blue to a more brownish shade.  The underside of the flat crown has an unmarked black oil cloth stiffener.  Around 25% of the shiny black finish of the oil cloth has flaked off. The quill tip of the 10 inch black ostrich feather is cracked, but still intact. The hat is in clean condition with no fading, and no moth damage, tears or other damage to the felt.  Please see my other auctions for more items from my 60+ year military collection.
