"Holy Family"
Antique Holy Card
–
Painted by Benedictine Monks
We love this Holy Family. It’s one of the most unique portrayals we’ve seen, with its Art Deco elements, its geometric calm, and the quiet joy of the young Jesus. We love that it’s set in the kitchen and workshop with a host of angels watching! Mary is siting on a throne and has a duster on her lap! She is a working Queen! The picture is intriguing and helps us imagine the Holy Family and the happy home life they had.
It was painted by Benedictine monks of the Beuron art school, a movement of art founded in Germany in the late 19th century.
One of the founders, Father Desiderius Lenz, said of their aesthetic principles:
“The art speaks to the mind of the viewer. The art is itself worshipful and invites the viewer to worship. It does not stand out boldly of itself but is part of an environment of worship. Works are anonymous, done by group effort, and not for the glory of the artist, but of God.”
We find that extremely refreshing and hope you do, too.
(Verlag von Hermann Kitz and B. kühlen , M. Gladbach were publishers. Ravensburg is an old city in Germany.)
