The dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed of dog belonging to the hound family. The standard size dachshund was bred to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature dachshund was developed to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits. In the American West they have also been used to hunt prairie dogs. Today, they are bred for conformation shows and as family pets. Some dachshunds participate in earthdog trials. According to the AKC, the dachshund continues to remain one of the top 10 dog breeds in the United States.

This 1 oz 999 silver coin features a beautiful colour image of a Dachshund
set against the finely engraved background of a child and dog enjoying each other’s company. Each of the coins within the Dogs and Cats series will feature a Swarovski Circonia stone. The My Best Friend Basset Hound coin features a aquamarine stone shaped like a bone.

The obverse features the emblem of Republic of Fiji and is engraved with the specifications of '2 dollars' and the year '2013'.
