This knife truly personifies the concepts of the “art knife” and the “knife as jewelry”. Here the theme is “otherworldly”. The bolsters are etched and anodized meteoric nickel iron showing the “Widmanstatten patterns” or large crystal arrays of nickel and iron atoms which develop over eons of slow cooling. They add weight to this knife, which is almost 4 oz. The bolsters are at the “head” of the comet tailed deeply carved black lipped pearl scales. When deployed the Damascus blade shows a repeating spiral pattern, conjuring the spiral nebulae of intergalactic space. It too is anodized in parts deep blue which blends with blue file worked liners all around.
The spine is also file worked and inlayed with pearl bookending 3 garnets. The interior of the spring is file worked as well, and displays the name of the maker. To top it off, the thumb stud contains an inset spherical ruby.
Only in daylight does the full iridescence of the pearl and Damascus strike the eye, not so in the fluorescent lights in the photo lab.
This knife is sculptured to fit and caress the hand and the action is smooth as glass. A wonderful and inspired legacy of the artist.
