    Description

Original Alcan Highway License Plate, later named the Alaskan Highway when near finished building it. It is fresh from the estate of the owner of the plate (he is shown in photos above in uniform).
"Keep Them Rolling On The Alcan"
Alcan stood for Al=Alaska can=Canada. The highway goes from Canada to Alaska. Its component highways are BC British Columbia B.C. Highway 97, Yukon Highway 1 and Alaska Route 2.
The plate comes with a photo album of the Gentleman who had it framed.  The photos are of him in his capacity as one of those who drove the road and supervised during the making of the Highway. He took some some wonderful early street shots.  He had a good camera and the shots are clear.   He also had an
    autographic camera
where the photographer could write on the images.   There are also pictures of many of the spots along the way with mile notations.  In total there are approx. 120+ pictures.  The album is complete; no photos have been removed.  It shows well.  Many are labelled on the back in pencil with names or nicknames of the people.   The album is a great historical one of a kind piece on its own. This came from the estate recently, the man wanted the information preserved and added a few new notes to the tops of the pages in his last years.
The license plate is made of what looks like a compressed composition material, likely paper based.  It was framed and sealed inside the frame and the gallery label says it was matted and framed in February 1962.   The label is from Garfield Gallery in Toronto, The address for those not familiar with Toronto is approx. Yonge and Bloor street, the major retail intersection and a place where the best art galleries were located.
The matting is yellow and a perfect match to bring out the yellow on the plate. The frame is also very nice. There would be no need to reframe this item.
As an amateur historian it is a great pleasure to handle something like this.
Items ship expertly packed and fully insured. Would consider trades for Canadian porcelain license plates.
